FAQ :: top 10

These are the questions I get, by far, the most often.  what's more, is that most of them were already answered elsewhere in the faq!  please, if your question isn't here, read the rest of the faq before submitting it.

here they are, in no particular order:
Why can't I connect to Napster?
Why does someone I know is online appear "offline"?
What do the colored dots by the user names and search results mean?
What does "ping" mean?
How do I play an mp3 file?
How much does Napster cost?
How can I change my user name?
How can I connect to a specific server?
Why can't I get more than 250 search results?
How can I remove files from my library?

Q: Why can't I connect to Napster?
A: The Napster music community is growing very rapidly. Napster inc. is doing its best to keep up with the growth, and if you can't connect, it isn't because you did something wrong.  Chances are the servers are just experiencing a large demand, and you can't squeeze in.  Keep trying, and you'll get in, in due time.

Q: Why does someone I know is online appear "offline"?
A: While there are numerous Napster servers, currently they are not linked to one another.  Therefore, if userX in on one server, and userY is on any other server, UserX cannot see, chat with, or share files with UserY.  This is not the permanent state of the servers, they will be linked at some point in the future.

Q: What do the colored dots by the user names and search results mean?
A: The colored circles, shown next to each name in the channel names list and next to each search result in under the search tab, indicate the connection speed of the given user.   The speed/color breakdown is as follows:
     green:    Cable and above
     yellow:   56k modem to ISDN-128k
red:       33.6 below and below (and "unknown" speed)

Q: What does "ping" mean?
A: The ping is the amount of time (in milliseconds) one packet takes to make a round trip from your computer, to the other person's computer (or, the person being 'pinged').  A lower ping means a faster download across the same connection speeds. (i.e. if you have 2 people on the same speed connection, choosing the person with the lower ping time would be better).

Q: How do I play an mp3 file?
A: While in Napster, you can use it's internal mp3 player, located under your library tab.  Other popular Windows mp3 players include Winamp and Sonique.

Q: How much does Napster cost?
A: Napster, both the service and the software, are 100% free!

Q: How Can I change my user name?
A: Uninstall Napster, and reinstall it. This will allow you to choose a different user names.

Q: How can I connect to a specific server?
A: You can't.  In an effort to keep your quality of service as high as possible by distributing the load of Napster users evenly, Napster chooses the server you will connect to each time you connect.

Q: Why can't I get more than X search results?
A: Napster is still beta, and as such as still in testing.  Regardless of what you set your maximum results in your search settings to be, Napster will only return a certain maximum number of results (usually 100).

Q: How can I remove files from my library?
A: Since Your library is merely a list of files in the 'library paths' on your hard drive, all that you need to do is move or delete the files in Windows explorer, right click on your library, and choose the 'Refresh Library' menu item.
